National
Education for Hong Kong: a small victory for the People?

After
the show of power by the large number of protestors yesterday, CY Leung has
announced that while the government will not cancel the initiative, it will remove
the 3-year deadline for the implementation of national education in Hong Kong.
No new deadline has been set and individual schools may proceed as they see
fit. Since anything that has no deadline will usually drag on for ever, we probably don't need to worry about national
education for some time.
This
might seem a small victory, but it's a big step for true democracy for the Hong
Kong people. This is the best lesson in "national education" for all
of us: Express your opinions and demonstrate your belief in a peaceful and
dignified manner...the government will have to listen whether they like it or
not. I bet our brothers to the north are envious of what we have achieved
today.
Now,
our next target is universal suffrage... there's no true democracy without it!
Regardless of what some people might say, we the people of Hong Kong are ready
for true democracy.
