The ‘accidental’ discovery of this article (see attachment) is a whole new revelation to me.  Earth-shattering in fact.  I am mentally shattered to realize how much I was ripped off.

Now it dawns on me why we (my wife and) were often taken to and ushered into ‘special’ shops by the tourist guides – Tourist Traps really in all but name.  It also explained why they locked the door behind us supposedly for our ‘safety and security’.  I am so grateful to this article because for once, I can now bargain from a position of strength, in a field which has now been leveled, because I now know how much to counter-bargain.

Minus 500% to start with.  Add in some mild expletives if they counter-offer at 499%.  Add more and stronger expletives until the offer is to your satisfaction.  You get the drift.

I will also be enlisting the help of my Triad Associates to lob a few Molotov Cocktails at those shops which sold us ‘special deals’.

Incidentally, this article has raised some questions – questions to do with the avoidance of circumstances which cause the rip-off to take place.

As a total stranger visiting a new place, how do you avoid being offered ‘special prices’ when:

a.           you know next to nothing about the place, the people, the culture, the norms,

b.          the ‘normal’ range and availability of merchandise you are taken to see, or see,

c.          you know nothing about the price benchmarks, or more appropriately the prices local pay,

d.          you see a must-have – mostly handicraft – which is possibly a one-off and unique,

e.           you are under time-pressure to grab one or miss out. Many rue about that ‘missed opportunity’, or the mantra ‘Honey, I am glad I bought’,

f.            the chances of you returning to make that purchase is zilch,

g.          your partner threatens a divorce or to withhold some unspecified ‘privileges’ if you don’t buy, or let her buy,

h.          your partner say ‘You poke guy, I buy what I like’,

i.             you know the item in question is a real bargain compared to the same item from where you come from.  I know a few, like the price of bananas.

j.             buying that item promotes spousal happiness to the Nth degree, with the consequential unlimited access to some unspecified ‘privileges’,

k.          the tourist guide is so helpful, charming and good-looking that you want to be ripped off anyway.

I will be eternally grateful for your words of wisdom and feedback to the above.
