Peter Tsang:    Chi-Chung,with such a vast & huge population & have undergone decades of external & internal wars, China in the early fifty¡¦s, was just like a old & sick dying person. I believe most of our grandparents in China were having a very poor & low standard of living & for those who survive, their life are no better than animals. Chinese people like you, as refugees & migrated to the States, as far as I know, in the 80¡¦s were in large number.

To have China be governed properly, appropriately & orderly with be of immense difficulty. It¡¦s entirely not easy but with hurdles & hurdles that government officials have to conquer, one after the other. Nowadays, besides home affairs, there are tremendous pressure from the outside world, especially the States & our neighbours, Japan, Fillipine, Vietnam ...... who are always there to create conflicts & trigger violence in order to suppress China¡¦s growth & development. This is obvious & clear that they are very afraid & jealous of China¡¦s getting stronger & stronger.

China, to the best of my knowledge, is always kind & sincere to all countries on earth. We love & treasure peace because we never forget, millions of millions of our Chinese ancestors have lost their life in the Sino-Japanese war & thereafter civil wars during the nineteen century. Their life are innocently taken away by invaders from other countries. We have learned a big lesson & China got to be cleverer & stronger in order to protect our people, life & property.

Once again, I strongly believe that patriotic is hundred percent correct & a must for all citizens to compile. Whether you are rich or poor, male or female, whatever colours, whatever races, whatever nationality ...... love towards own country should be taught & be inherited to generations after generations.

I love my family & I love my own country ¡V China, always !

CC Lin:             Peter ,I agree with you that the Chinese Government has been facing tremendous challenges to improve the economy, infrastructures, the welfare of the people etc. with the largest population in the world suffering from more than a century of foreign invasions and exploitations (particularly from Japan) and their own political infighting and corruption both of which are getting better now. They have made very good progress during the past 30 years. Most of my graduate students at the University in China are planing to work in China for their better future.

Some of those problems facing China such as political infighting between the politicians, also occur in the US where there has been no war in the continental US since the Civil War from 1861-1865. US has built up the leadership in science and technology over a long period of time. China is trying to catch up by putting increasingly more resources to their higher education and research systems. Many young foreign-trained scientists and engineers who believe in the future of China are returning to work in China. Many foreign companies are setting up shop in China in the interest of the globalization of business.

Pony Ma:        Chi-Chung, I admire you looking at China always from the positive angle. While I agree with you on the humongous task of running the country, and the country is making improvements in many areas, I disagree with you on "corruption is getting better now" and "putting increasingly more resources to their higher education".

From what I have seen in the past 17 years since I was on assignment to China in 1995¡Acorruption is getting worse! It is everywhere and the size of corruption is getting unbelievable! For many of the Chinese who travel inside and outside of China, no one can account for where their money is from. For example, Land are grabbed by developers because they bribe the local authorities... Contractors are getting the contracts because they have connections and paid... Procurement from each enterprise work with vendors to get kickbacks... on and on...

Higher education (as a matter of fact, education in general) is getting out of reach from ordinary people because it is getting so expensive. The wealthy and connected ones just send their children out of the country.

Health care is another big one. Those hospitals and doctors! They make money on prescribing unnecessary drugs and procedures! And big percentage of the doctors are taking red pockets (especially if they are in the position, like surgeons), and take paybacks from drug companies!

These problems are not unique to China, but we should not pretend that we do not see them and we need to speak up else China will never improve!

Bob Choi:        It takes exceptional courage for someone to speak out against what's wrong in China especially if that someone happens to reside there. China has made it abundantly clear that dissidents will not be tolerated. whistle-blowers in the US became heroes; in China they ended up in jail. Pop quiz for those with an inquisitive mind: what happened to the doctor who tracked sown the SARS outbreak in China? the people who pointed out the shoddy construction of buildings that fell like dominos in the Sichuan earthquake? the people who disclosed the guilty parties responsible for milk "enriched" with melamine? These are people who care about the well-being of their countrymen and the future of the country. These are true patriots. They should receive medals or some citizen awards...but can you name even one of them? Again, may I ask what happened to them?
