50 and counting...

Hey, the Rolling Stones are about to play a gig in Hyde Park in July.  They will also tour America, as part of the 50 and counting celebrations.

Much as I find their music OK, I have to take my hat off to them, for many reasons.

Firstly, they have to be the most ever-lasting and ever-green rock band in the history of rock music. They have been around for 50 years easily, lived through a few eras and despite squabbles, they are still around. They are still together.

Secondly, they are all alive and well, on the surface any way. They still have their full crop of hair (albeit white), have kept their slender body shape, have their full mental faculty and can still play and tour. Living in their rock and roll life-style, it is remarkable and they have not popped off 20 or 30 years earlier.

Thirdly, given their physical and mental conditions, and given years of drug taking and substance abuses, they are still in one piece.  I desperately would like to know what drugs they are on and whatever they are, they must be good drugs.  I want some. No, I want plenty.

I admire and envy Mick’s entourage of girl-friends. One of his earliest ones, Marianne Faithful, was also a dream girlfriend of mine. She was. Not anymore.

Like Teflon, nothing seems to stick about Mick. Over the year, his stature grows.  I can full understand why he was given the big gong.  When you have been around for as long as he has, you eventually get to the top of the knighthood queue.  That’s just simple math and probability.

It was said that John Lennon was the glue which held the Beatles together.  For the Stones, that honour goes to Mick.  He reportedly keeps a tight reins on matters to do with the Stones. While on tour, instead of leaving matters to the promoters, he insists on being kept informed on ticket sales and will not hesitate to intervene personally if he doesn’t like the look of anything. Good on him.

I won’t be in Hyde Park to attend the gig but I do wish him and the Stones good luck and good health for their American tour.
