I am fine
but Christchurch as a city is not, struck yet by another 6.3 magnitude
earthquake on 22nd Feb (at lunch time). This is the smaller
earthquake which struck Christchurch (compared to the 7.1 magnitude earthquake
in Sep 2010) but the damages are extensive. What’s worse, there
are 65 fatalities so far when there was none last time. The most iconic
building in Christchurch, the Christchurch Catherine suffers extensive damage,
with the spire collapsed. As in the
last one, there was mud and water everywhere, caused by a process called
liquefaction (water and mud just ooze from the ground).
This
earthquake will devastate Christchurch’s economy, when it barely recovers from
the last one. It will certainly kill the property market. My ex-neighbour, who lives in Christchurch, commented that it
is extremely difficult to get a
decent building to buy, as so many require repairs in one form or another.
All my
wife’s extended family is OK. They are in
Christchurch.
