Peter Cheung:

My comment is based on the observations in heart attacks and strokes where ischemia blocking of blood flow to the affected areas and causes all kind of damages. But even if blood flow returns(reperfusion), the affected ischemia area still have other kinds of changes and damages called reperfusion injury caused by the oxygen radicals formed when xanthine oxidase activity is induced by the lack of oxygen.

Oxygen radicals are produced in our body all the time. Our body produces endogenous antioxidants to balance them out until this defense is weakened by aging or other insults. So exercise produces oxygen radicals which induce antioxidants to clean them up. There a saying that one should not take anti-oxidant right after exercise. Otherwise the exercise benefit is lessen. Excessive smoking and alcohol will produce a lot of radicals and weaken our anti-oxidant defense.

The most important health issue is not to have blockage in the vessels.. Even George Bush who exercises a lot needs a stent last week. Stress is the most important but hardest issue to control. A rat forced to swim unceasingly for 30 min everyday for 1-2 week developed many blockages in it blood vessels. See that it had a lot exercise!!! I cannot offer valuable comment on exercise. Many people dont exercise and live to their 90's.

But we should exercise regularly and appropriately. Now as I age more, I need more time to recover. I cannot exercise everyday. I am sure I have some issues with my blood vessels. If I stay in the cold for 30 min in Winter, my big toes will be numbed! So I double up my socks in Winter. Probably cold causes restriction of blood flow to my toes. Is gout disease more relevant in Winter time.

Pedro:

OK, Ah Gay, I’m really glad you’ve only got Gout and not something far more sinister, serious and structural, like cancer, renal failure, or Alzheimer’s disease.
Also the good news is that the remedy is pretty effective. At least the medicine doesn’t turn you into a half-wasted skeleton or Frankenstein.

As I said before, good things do come out of bad. Firstly yours telling us about Gout has hugely enriched our knowledge and understanding about Gout. Secondly, it has prompted a most useful remedy by our Sue Tang who has since been promoted to our unofficial forum doctor. I must add she is not a bare-foot doctor. She is a high-heeled doctor slinging a Prada handbag.

Thirdly, by careful dieting as suggested by Dr. Sue, you will possibly prolong your live span by 150 years. If Gout has not surfaced, you are possibly half way to the western sky.

Lastly, it teaches all of us the perils of eating a rich diet, willingly or unwillingly. Many of us, like you, are successful businessmen who have to entertain or be entertained. Directly and indirectly, we become the casualty of our success.
