The biggest restaurant in China...

Biggest, fastest, longest, tallest – these are some of the superlatives we often hear being used to describe China’s infra-structures and its economic growth.

The rate it’s going, China will soon add another superlative by overtaking the US as the biggest economy in the world. Then what’s next?

While it’s nice to have the biggest, tallest, longest, fastest or whatever, they sound rather empty when a large chunk of the population is not able to partake in the fruits of its economic success. Quite on the contrary, much of its populace are paying the price for its run-away industrial success – rampant and unchecked environment degradation and pollution, harsh and unsafe working conditions and environment, chronic corruption, income inequalities, social injustice, a lack of moral fibre where money and connections reign supreme, where the law of the jungle rules, were those who can't fend for themselves are side-lined.

Instead of building the tallest, biggest, longest, why don’t they devote more time and energy to address, tackle, contain, reduce, correct some of those ills I just mentioned? Why do some of the people in China stand up and say, hey, I’ve built the biggest orphanage in China, I have organized the biggest volunteer army to look after the disadvantaged, I have raised the biggest sum of money for charities, I have held the government officials accountable for their decisions and spending, I have helped hundreds of thousands to get a fair wage, I have built the biggest workshop and housing complex for the disabled…the list of things they can do to restore social injustice, to rectify the erosion of moral fibre, to make the society more equitable must be endless. Why can’t they do more of those and put them in Youtube instead of a frigging restaurant?

PS It would not surprise me one bit for a Chinese to build the biggest public toilet in the world. Now he deserves to have a medal for providing the biggest public convenience! China desperately needs decent, hygienic public toilets. And lessons to use them properly!!!
