Piano Music (2)
C.C. Lin
2014年3月12日
Thanks for my friend Stella Tse's kind invitation for me to play the piano.  However, as at least some of my friends would know, I never had any formal education on music theory and CANNOT read music scores. Consequently, I CANNOT play any musical instrument. Yet I resonate with music as much as Lang Lang, arguably one of the best pianists in the world. I enjoy listening to music, but not necessarily limited to, classical music which I love and profoundly appreciate since my Primary school days by listening to that from the radio stations in Hong Kong while doing my home work as my life-long multi-tasking habit.  However, it is limited to music appreciation only as I cannot play any musical instrument.  I would not attempt to sing if there is another person around me as my singing would conceivably cause great harm to other people.  As a result, I can only listen to my music in a small relatively sound proof room at home with hundreds of my CDs and DVDs in a simulated concert hall surround sound setting when nobody is in the room.

During some previous  reunions with friends, I attended orchestral concerts in Sydney, Australia and in Hong Kong . My body tends to move uncontrollably with the music I enjoy so much which may conceivably cause harm to the audience nearby. During the Vancouver Reunion many years ago, my friend Henry Mak took  me to his private music room where we listened to the songs of The Beatles, The Brothers Four etc. which I also love.

When I was a graduate student of Biochemistry at Indiana University (with one of the world's largest and best music school) for a little more than 4 years, I attended many free concerts and violin and piano master classes where I would be allowed to read books and papers as the concert halls were fully lighted.  That was a great music appreciation education for me.  I also discussed music with the music students and occasionally with the professors at my non-professional level.  Those people had been very kind to me as they thought I would be a big customer to them in the future.

I maintained contacts with my life-long and free classical music appreciation teacher friend Maestro Youdani BUTT (also a leading piano teacher) who conducted and made more than 50 excellent CD-recordings with some of the very best orchestras in the world (London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic etc.). He also has Ph.D. in Chemistry. He was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Hawaii for some time before returning to China. Here is a web-link to Butt's most recent excellent recording of Beethoven's 2nd Symphony with London Symphony Orchestra:

At San Diego, California, where I live since 1979, we have the La Jolla SummerFest on chamber music in August with many free open rehearsals performed by some of the world's best musicians (including some of the music professors from Indiana University) where I can talk to them freely about music.

I cannot live a day without my music.
