The checker-board illusion has always intrigued because it demonstrates how amazingly different on what actually is, and what we think it is. A and B are supposed to have same shades.
Attached is a small tool for you to observe and appreciate how different it can be. You should use the ppt in edit mode (i.e. as is after it is called up) and not in the display mode (i.e. without the editing menus around it, like running a pps file), because only in edit mode that you can move the L-shapes away from their original positions using the mouse.
